Marble Falls girls soccer takes fourth at tourney
The Marble Falls High School girls soccer team finished fourth at the Wimberley tournament Jan. 4-6.
The Lady Mustangs beat Mercedes 8-0 and lost to San Antonino Davenport 3-1, West Plains 4-0 and Wimberley 2-0.
“I think it’s going to make us better,” head coach Abigail Blunt said. “The losses aren’t what we want. It’s the build-up we needed so we can improve. Last year it was learning how to win. Now we know how to win. Now it’s do you know how to win the tough games, the ones that are 1-0?”
Marble Falls was one of several high school soccer teams to play during the weekend. Blunt anticipated about 90 percent of the high school squads across the state played in a tournament.
While getting the athletes back into playing shape was a goal, Blunt said she had specifics she was looking for from her players.
“I wanted to see a little more chemistry,” she said. “I wanted to see how they adapted to the tough competition. Our girls adapted well in different scenarios. They played well against teams that were super tough. It showed me what I needed to see.”
Among the discoveries was an added emphasis on offensive spacing.
Presley Kahl scored four goals, while Calie Brydon, Ashley Ferreira, Dulce Macias, Suzena Perez and Hannah Welch each scored.
Both Davenport and Wimberley are in District 26-4A, while Mercedes is in District 32-5A.
Marble Falls is in District 25-4A, which meets District 26-4A in the first round of the playoffs.
“Our bi-district is very solid,” Blunt said. “Our region is very solid. You can see a solid group of players. There are no holes, no gaps. It’s solid play across the board. And that’s awesome. Our bi-district (opponents are) consistently ranked in the region and the state.”
Blunt noted the Lady Mustangs are making the most of the time they have left before they embark on the district campaign. A year ago Marble Falls was the runner-up.
“We have two weeks until we start district,” she said. “We need to make sure the girls are good to go. It’s important.”
Marble Falls competes in the Waco Tournament Thursday-Saturday, Jan. 11-13.
