The Marble Falls High School boys basketball team posted a 1-1 record at the Wimberley Tournament Dec. 28 thanks to beating Navarro 55-37 and losing to San Antonio Great Hearts Northern Oaks 47-44.

Head coach Travis Crain called the victory “a total team win.”

“We started out a little lethargic at first, but we picked it up,” he said. “I thought we looked good conditioning wise.”

He called up three junior varsity players and started some reserves because the Mustangs were limited in player availability.

Against Great Heart Northern Oaks, the Mustangs had the ball last and attempted a 3-pointer at the horn in an effort to send the game into overtime.

“We had a great look at it and just missed it,” Crain said.

Marble Falls had the advantage at the intermission, but the Griffins took the lead in the third period.

“It was a cat-and-mouse game the entire fourth quarter,” Crain said. “We came out a shot short of tying it.”

One reason Crain scheduled a holiday tournament was to help his athletes “play ourselves back into shape.”

The Mustangs practiced Dec. 27 after the five-day mandatory break by the University Interscholastic League ended.

“I was really proud of our efforts all day in both games,” he said. “It was good to get the effort plus the ‘w.’ We had two really good games we played at a fast pace. “

The Mustangs travel to play the Liberal Arts and Science Academy of Austin Friday, Jan. 5, with the freshmen taking the floor at 5:15 p.m., the junior varsity at 6:30 p.m., and the varsity at 8 p.m.
