The Faith Academy of Marble Falls boys basketball team beat Austin Hyde Park 70-65 Dec. 19.
The Flames raced to an 18-4 lead in the opening five minutes. head coach Zakk Revelle struggled to a recall a time when the Flames trailed.
“We did what young teams do and put it on cruise control,” Revelle said with a chuckle.
Hyde Park has a new coach, Daniel Pittsford, and the Panthers are adjusting to a new voice. Revelle credited Hyde Park for fighting and forcing the Flames to play a complete game.
“It’s good film for us to have,” he said. “And on top of that, we could compete and finish the game.”
The Flames hit free throws to ice the contest. Freshman guard Will Slyker scored 29 points to lead all scorers.
Some starters were unavailable. So the Flames started freshman center Collten Kohutek and sophomore guard Alan Hausman.
“They did a great job overall and competed,” the coach said. “We wanted to see who we can trust. It was nice to win the game and face adversity. Overall, it was a complete team victory.”
Faith will enjoy Christmas before returning to the court for the Boerne Geneva Holiday Tournament Thursday-Saturday, Dec. 28-30. The Flames face San Antonio Christian Schools at 10:45 a.m. and Houston Legos Prep at 3:30 p.m., both on Dec. 28.
Before breaking for Christmas, the Flames conducted their first alumni game Dec. 20 with 14 former players taking the court. Revelle said the game used a running clock. At first, it was the alumni against the current players then they mixed up the rosters and simply played.
“They had more guys than we did,” Revelle said. “Some guys are on vacation or out of town. It was a cool deal to have everybody back and see familiar faces.”
The alumni also allowed Revelle to emphasize another part of the program to his current players.
“You stand on the shoulders of those guys,” he said. “They set the bar. You live up to it and hopefully exceed it.”
