The Faith Academy of Marble Falls girls basketball team continues preparations for the District 3-3A campaign of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools.

The Lady Flames lost to Austin St. Stephen’s Episcopal 36-29 Dec. 15 on the heels of a setback to Lago Vista 45-39 Dec. 12. Faith Academy finished third in its own tournament that was played Dec. 8-9.

Head coach Kat Canada noted her athletes have experienced line-up changes because of who’s available to play. Therefore, they are still learning each other’s tendencies, which sometimes affects the offensive flow.

“They’re at a point in the game where the momentum has shifted,” she said. “It’s that next level. A lot of times (senior center Morgan Weems) will set that tone. They feed off that energy. We can win without her.”

Younger sister Natalie Weems, a sophomore post, is demonstrating a comfort and confidence when she is playing, the coach said.

“Natalie is doing really well,” she said. “We’ve been working on rebounding a lot.”

Canada said the Lady Flames are getting shots. Now the challenge is to make the baskets. She noted that getting an offensive rebound still requires a player who can keep her concentration on making the shot even while getting bumped and fouled.

“It’s hard to grab it, take the hit and put it in,” she said. “We can do all the things right; we’re in position and we don’t score.”

She also credits freshmen Lilly Koziel, Sidney Solomon and Kenley Virdell for their contributions.

“Our freshmen play such a big role in our tempo,” she said.

Seniors Ella Cosby, Charlee Ehrig, Elleson Lehmberg, Audri Poage, Claire Poage, Alayna Steele and Weems still set the tone for the squad and are seeing just how good the team can be, the coach said.

“I can’t complain,” she said. “Elleson is seeing the court. She’s doing way better at managing the game. She and Ella are figuring it out. I think they will be big in district.”

After Christmas Faith will play in the Boerne Geneva Holiday Tournament Thursday-Saturday, Dec. 28-30.

The Lady Flames begin the first day against Houston St. Pisue at 9:15 a.m. and San Antonio Castle Hills at 11:45 a.m.
