The Marble Falls High School girls basketball team lost to New Braunfels High 52-39 Dec. 15.

The two teams played to a 15-15 tie after the first period, and the Unicorns led 26-24 at the half.

New Braunfels led 29-26 in the third stanza and hit the first of six 3-pointers to get the separation the Unicorns wanted.

“They outscored us 18-4,” Lady Mustangs head coach John Berkman said, pointing out the 44-30 deficit after three periods.

During the time between quarters, Berkman said he told his players they can “quit right here and lose by 25.” Or they could step back on the floor give everything they have.

They chose to fight.

“We cut the gap to nine,” he said. “In the fourth quarter, we outscored them 11-8.”

Part of the reason why Marble Falls was in the game is because of the defensive pressure the Lady Mustangs applied and how they handled the Unicorns’ pressure, the coach said.

“That gave us a little bit of a lift,” he said. “We wanted to create some turnovers and steals. Overall, it did.”

New Braunfels had 21 rebounds, 13 assists, 23 steals and 3 blocks. Marble Falls had 36 rebounds, 10 assists, 8 steals and a block.

Marble Falls had a field goal percentage of 61 percent, while New Braunfels had a 28 percent field goal percentage.

“I felt like we played a lot better,” Berkman said. “Our field goal percentage was 68 percent from 2-point range. We shot the ball well when we shot it. We’re still turning the ball over too much.”

Senior center Lexie Edwards led with 19 points and 5 rebounds. Junior forward Bethany Fry added 10 points, while junior forward Kylie Roberts had 6 points and 4 rebounds, and junior guard Kenadie Cotton had 5 assists.

“I’m proud of our effort,” Berkman said. “We’re right in the game the whole time. We looked comfortable the whole game. New Braunfels is a (Class) 6A school. That says a lot for that group. They’re not just going to quit. That says a lot about our team.”

The Lady Mustangs welcome Blanco Thursday, Dec. 21, with the sub varsities playing at 1:30 p.m. and the varsity at 3 p.m.
