The Marble Falls High School girls basketball team lost to Leander Rouse 29-25 Nov. 20 before taking the Thanksgiving holiday.
“Defensively, I’m really proud of what we did,” head coach John Berkman said. “We held them to under 30 points. We preach that a lot. It keeps you in games.”
The Lady Mustangs (1-6) led 10-2 early in the first quarter and trailed 15-14 at the half.
The Lady Raiders outscored the Lady Mustangs 14-2 in the third quarter for a 29-16 lead.
Marble Falls outscored Rouse 9-0 in the fourth quarter, which helped tremendously down the stretch as the Lady Mustangs trailed 29-22 with about two minutes remaining.
“That’s a big piece of the puzzle,” Berkman said. “I’m really proud of that effort there. The girls played hard and did some things to keep them in it.”
Rouse had 23 rebounds, 4 assists, 15 steals and 2 blocks. Marble Falls had 20 rebounds, 7 assists, 9 steals and 2 blocks.
Marble Falls senior center Lexie Edwards led with 16 points. Junior guard Kenadie Cotton hit a 3-pointer with eight seconds remaining in regulation.
“Coming out of a timeout on an inbounds play,” Berkman said.
As he reflected back on the contest, the coach said the Lady Mustangs continue to show their understanding of the schemes and concepts and are getting used to the fast pace of the varsity level.
“I think they feel like we’re getting closer,” he said. “They’re struggling with confidence in themselves. Sometimes that’s hard for young players. We’re doing some things well, we’re getting better at different things. There’s a lot of basketball still left.”
Marble Falls will play in the Battle of the Bay tournament in Corpus Christi Nov. 30-Dec. 2.
