The Faith Academy of Marble Falls boys basketball team beat San Marcos Academy 72-34 Nov. 17 for the Flames’ first victory this season.

Faith raced to a 22-10 lead in the first quarter and never looked back.

“We played really good defense,” head coach Zakk Revelle said. “What we’re looking for is the next coming games is better defense. We have a really good defensive group.”

That started with sophomore center Judah Phillips, who dropped in 19 points but forced San Marcos Academy to adjust their shots and stay away from the lane. Meanwhile junior guard Asher Apel helped set the defensive tone by getting steals and forcing bad passes that resulted in pushing the tempo. The Bears (3-4) couldn’t keep up. Apel finished with 18 points.

Other standouts includes senior guard Gabe Lopez and sophomore point guard Jase Marshall.

“Everybody contributed,” Revelle said.

He pointed out the highlight of the night came from senior Micah Anderson, who made a free throw that sent the crowd into a frenzy.

“He’s the epitome of our culture of ‘love each other,'” the coach said. “He’s the most selfless person I know. That was the loudest the crowd was all night.”

Faith had 41 rebounds, 15 assists, 11 steals and a block. San Marcos Academy had 23 rebounds, 6 assists and 8 steals.

This contest was an opportunity for the coaches of both teams to catch up. San Marcos Academy coach Harvey Rhodes has known Faith assistant coach Malcolm Canada from his childhood. And Rhodes has served as an advisor to Revelle when it came to preparations for the state tournament and scouting reports.

“He’s a really good coach,” Revelle said. “I highly respect him. He was so supportive. He’d call me and talk to me.”

The Flames are traveling to face Austin Hill Country at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 21, in a double header with the Lady Flames. The girls junior varsity plays at 4:30 p.m. and the girls varsity is at 6 p.m.
