Marble Falls boys basketball begins season with loss to Lockhart

The Marble Falls High School boys basketball team lost to Lockhart 42-38 Nov. 11.

The Mustangs traveled to Lockhart for the season opener.

“We never felt like we were going to lose that game until it happened,” head coach Travis Crain said. “We had what I thought would be an ‘and-one’ (three-point play) that was waived off and a no-call. They turned it over when two kids ran into each other. The ball went out of bounds.”

Crain noted not every Mustang made the trip and still made a game of it with Marble Falls having a 17-13 lead at the half and trailed by two points at the end of the third period.

“We’d get up two or three and get down five or get up two or three and get down three,” he said. “We could never pull away. We could never get that extra score to get a cushion. We only gave up two 3-pointers, and two were in the fourth quarter. We were doing what we needed to do. Lockhart got more going in the second half.”

Marble Falls had 32 rebounds, 11 assists, 10 steals and 4 blocks. Lockhart had 34 rebounds, 6 assists, 6 steals and 5 blocks.

“We had some tough breaks that didn’t help,” Crain said. “We had our chances.”

Junior point guard Tidus Willie led with 13 points followed by junior forward Garen Jones with 11. Senior guard Davis Dreisbach had 7 points and 9 rebounds.

In addition to not having every Mustang make the trip, Crain pointed out some players who are new to the varsity are adjusting to the speed.

“A couple of guys who were in their first varsity game are being acclimated to the situation,” he said. “They’ll know more of what to expect and be more prepared.”

The Mustangs are on the road all week. They’re traveling to play Austin Navarro Tuesday, Nov. 14. The freshmen play at 5:30, the junior varsity at 6:30 p.m. and the varsity at 8 p.m. The subvarsities are at the Liberty Hill tournament Thursday and Saturday, Nov. 16 and 18. The varsity travels to Leander High for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff Friday, Nov. 17.
