The Marble Falls High School girls basketball team lost to Austin McCallum 37-36 Nov. 7.
The Lady Mustangs (0-2) had a 36-35 lead with eight seconds left with possession of the ball. McCallum got the ball and raced down to score, but the shooter was fouled.
The McCallum shooter made both free throws with two seconds left. Marble Falls was out of timeouts, so it couldn’t set up a play.
“The game was lost because we didn’t take care of the ball,” head coach John Berkman said. “We definitely played better than we did (Nov. 3). We can definitely grow and learn from that. I thought our girls played really well.”
Marble Falls led 8-7 after the first period and trailed 19-17 at the intermission. The Lady Mustangs regained the lead in the third quarter for a 29-25 advantage.
“We had a big drop-off in the fourth quarter,” Berkman said. “We had a lead and didn’t hold onto to it.”
With four returning letterman and one starter back from last season, the other Lady Mustangs are learning through playing, he said, and may have shown their youth, inexperience and not understanding the moment.
“It’s knowing when to go fast and when to slow down,” he said. “We need them to grow up really fast. I’m definitely seeing improvement from this game.”
Among the positives were getting the ball to posts Lexie Edwards and Bethany Fry. Fry, a junior who made all eight of her field goal attempts, led with 16 points and 6 rebounds. Edwards, a senior, had 12 points and 3 rebounds, while junior Kenadie Cotton scored 4 points and 3 rebounds and sophomore Lila Pangborn added 3 points.
“We need Bethany to shoot and score,” Berkman said. “Some of that is her recognizing that’s her role on the offensive end.”
Marble Falls travels to play at Austin Eastside at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10.
“Improving from game to game was visible,” the coach said. “We’re working on putting it all together.”
