Davenport dominates Canyon Lake in district play
It wasn’t even close as the Davenport Wolves handed the Canyon Lake Hawks their first district loss on Oct. 13.
The Wolves (5-2 overall, 2-0 District 13-4A Division I) beat the Hawks 70-13 at Davenport High School. The Wolves now sit atop the district standings along with the Lampasas Badgers (6-1 overall, 2-0 District 13-4A Division I). Those two teams meet up Friday, Oct. 20, in Lampasas with the winner getting on more solid footing for the district crown.
The Hawks (2-4 overall, 1-1 District 13-4A Division I) now find themselves in a tough spot if they plan on successfully defending the district title they earned last year.
Against the Wolves, the Hawks found themselves falling behind quickly and by quite a margin.
Davenport scored with about 8 minutes 43 seconds left in the first quarter when Barrett Fallon banged his way into the end zone from eight yards out. The point after was good, and the Wolves went up 7-0. But it was just the first of many Davenport touchdowns on the night.
About four minutes later, Fallon added another rushing touchdown to give the Wolves a 14-0 lead.
In the second quarter, the Wolves exploded for 28 points while keeping the Hawks out of the end zone.
The Hawks finally got on the board in the third quarter when quarterback Steven Crowder connected with Harris Gilliam for a one-yard touchdown. The Hawks’ Jayden VanAusdall kicked the extra point, and Davenport led 42-7.
The Wolves responded three minuted later when quarterback Triston Hamlin completed a 56-yard touchdown pass to Emmet Greiman, and just like that Davenport was up 49-7.
The Hawks’ Trevin Cutrer added Canyon Lake’s second touchdown of the night on a 15-yard run. The score made it a 49-13 game, after the Wolves got a hand on the point-after attempt. But it was the last time the Hawks found the end zone. However, the Wolves added another 21 points on the night to end the game, 70-13.
The Hawks get a week to prepare for the Burnet Bulldogs (4-3 overall, 1-1 District 13-4A Division I). The Bulldogs come to Canyon Lake after beating Marble Falls 24-0. The game is at Hawk Stadium, 8555 FM 32 in Fischer. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at brushfire.com/comal-isd/clhs-vfb/555856. They typically go on sale midweek.
