Marble Falls tennis plays well in loss to Copperas Cove
The Marble Falls High School tennis team lost to Copperas Cove 8-11 Aug. 19.
Marble Falls head coach Sam Whitley commended his players for their efforts.
“I felt good,” he said. “They’re a (Class) 6A school, and we were playing without three of our top players. One of the big things is our kids are starting to get out and cheer and support their teammates. We got enthusiasm behind them.”
Three matches went to tiebreakers, and Marble Falls won one.
“Had we won those other two tiebreakers, we would have won the overall match,” Whitley said. “We rose to the competition, and they felt good about themselves and can see more progress.”
He noted Copperas Cove brought its best players to Marble Falls.
“In the spring we were very comparable,” Whitley said. “I’m tickled to death on how we competed. We had a lot of boys matches and mixed doubles we won.”
Next up is Lago Vista in the District 19-4A opener at 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 24, at the Nancy and Charlie Herrington Tennis Center on the Marble Falls High School campus. Lago Vista is the favorite to win the district championship. Teams will play a round robin for seedings for the district tournament that will be played in late September.
Whitley and Burnet head coach Nate Redman created the district schedule.
“I tried to have the first match in close proximity and the last match is more of a rivalry,” Whitley said. “Our lower seeds in the girls will determine the rest of the season. I think we made a lot of progress. We have to let the other matches play out now.”
