The Burnet High School volleyball team is 5-2 after the first week of the 2023 season.
The Lady Dawgs began the week with season-opening wins against Fischer Canyon Lake and Blanco Aug. 8, both in straight sets.
Then they traveled to the Wimberley Tex-Fest tournament Aug. 11-12 where they defeated New Braunfels Christian Academy 25-16, 26-24 and Marion 25-11, 25-18 before losing to “a great Floresville team,” head coach Crystal Shipley said. Floresville prevailed 29-27, 25-20. All three matches were in pool play.
Burnet entered the silver bracket Aug. 12 and beat Castroville Medina Valley 27-29, 25-22, 25-23 and lost to Blanco in two games.
“We didn’t play as well as we would have liked, but defeated Medina Valley in three sets after getting down eight points in the third set,” Shipley said. “We had to sit around until about 2:45 p.m. to play Blanco again. Blanco came out with a vengeance and didn’t make many errors. We struggled to earn points in a row and Blanco’s defense was just everywhere. Overall, we left the tournament 3-2 and know it will only go uphill from this.”
Burnet welcomes Copperas Cove to The Doghouse Tuesday, Aug. 15, with the subvarsities playing at 5 p.m. and the varsity at 6 p.m.
