The Marble Falls High School volleyball team began the season with a loss at Kyle Lehman 23-25, 23-25, 20-25 Aug. 8.
“We put ourselves in a lot of holes to open the game,” head coach Kait Goertz said. “There’s fight in the girls. You saw the three scores. There were three aggressive, tough fights. Unfortunately, it didn’t play in our favor. I thought the girls played well.”
This match, she said, can be summed by the sports saying of “it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish.”
That’s because Marble Falls was down by almost double digits throughout each set before embarking on a furious comeback the Lady Mustangs couldn’t quite finish.
“We’re outplaying Lehman (at the end of each game),” Goertz said. “We’re not getting that good start right now.”
She pointed out the positives she saw beginning with serve-receive, which starts the offense. She liked how the defensive specialists received the serve and got it to senior setter Ava Carter, who has the responsibility of matching hitters to blockers.
“I thought our serve-receive looked strong,” Goertz said. “Lehman didn’t have a single block against our offense — that’s exciting. We’re getting a more aggressive offense going. We got some kills out of our fast offense. There’s not going to be satisfaction until we put it all together. We’re doing a lot of good things.”
Goertz said the Lady Mustangs had the opposite challenge a year ago.
“I feel like last year, we couldn’t finish a game,” she said. “We could compete, and we didn’t know how to win. The key to our success is putting a full game together. We need to put it all together. It’s a different dynamic. The match didn’t end the way we wanted. I think there were a lot of positives. We’re trying to be 1 percent better than the day before.”
Marble Falls will have its home opener against Little River Academy Tuesday, Aug. 15, with the subvarsities playing at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity takes the court at 6:30 p.m.
