Marble Falls High School senior golfers Madison Deberard and Bode Moss signed their National Letters of Intent May 10 to play on the next level.
Deberard is heading to Blinn College, while Moss is going to Lyon College.
Marble Falls head coach Ricky Blackington said the two possess skills that college programs seek.
“College teams first and foremost like for kids who will compete,” he said. “A competitor has to put themselves in challenging situations. When you see those traits in a kid, it’s desirable for colleges. And you have a combination of that and skills. It sets apart some kids for greatness.”
Those were evident throughout the duo’s years of playing for the purple and gold.
Deberard advanced to the Class 4A Region III tournament this year where she finished seventh overall thanks to shooting an 83-86–169. She missed advancing to the state tournament by two strokes.
“Madison is a competitor,” Blackington said. “Madison has a combination of skills (and wanting to be challenged). I’ve seen in Madison since her sophomore year flashes of those qualities. As she matured and aged physically and within in her game, she has the ability to compete at a different level.”
That mix helped her be among the elite golfers in District 24-4A where she won the district championship and in District 25-5A during the 2019-20, 2020-21 and 2021-22 school years.
She graduates as a three-time regional qualifier and missed qualifying for the Class 5A state tournament in 2022 by five strokes.
Moss is a two-year letterman and helped the Mustangs finish second at the District 24-4A tournament and second at the Class 4A Region III tournament to advance to the state tournament, which is May 21-22 at The Legends Golf Course in Kingsland.
“Bode is definitely a competitor,” Blackington said. “He has more of I would say a rollercoaster skill set. When he pours it on, he can pour it on.”
The coach believes Moss has it in him to be a consistent contributor.
“If he continues that development, he’ll be a solid player,” he said.
During the 2020-21 season, Moss was an alternate for the regional tournament.
“I’m very proud of these kids,” Blackington said. “I’m extremely proud of kids who subject themselves to the life lessons that golf teaches that the kids are trying to take.”
