The Burnet High School softball team crushed Gatesville 11-1 in the second game of the bi-district series April 29 to sweep the Hornets and move on to the area round of the Class 4A playoffs.

The Lady Dawgs will face Smithville in a best-of-three series that begins Thursday, May 4, at Dripping Springs High School. Game times for each contest will be announced later.

Against Gatesville, Burnet was incredibly offensive from the start by plating three runs in the first inning, three in the second, two in the third, and three in the fifth.

That run production is what the Lady Dawgs are used to, head coach Hailey Wooten said.

“They were able to take pressure off because they were a game ahead,” she said. “It was a total team effort. The top of our line-up was good all the way around.”

Camrynn Guthrie led the way with 3 RBIs followed by two from Presely Crawford and a two-run homer from Kyleigh Mott. Journey Denton reached base three times and touched home plate all three times.

Pitcher Crawford (2-0 in the playoffs) struck out eight in four innings of work, while Mott had two strikeouts in the only inning she pitched.

Wooten said the Lady Dawgs didn’t do anything differently except play on Saturday because rain forced officials to postpone the second game by a day. Burnet won the first game 1-0 by scoring an unearned run.

“As a staff, we didn’t do too much talking,” she said. “(Before game one) we talked it up and made it a little too big.”

She couldn’t commend her players enough for competing at the high level the Lady Dawgs have shown in being the District 24-4A champions.
