Marble Falls softball sweeps Lago Vista in final home game of the season
The Marble Falls High School softball team beat Lago Vista 14-12 April 14 in its final home game of the 2023 season at Scearce Field.
Before the game, the Lady Mustangs invited softball teams of the Marble Falls Youth Baseball and Softball Association to participate in pre-game activities and be honorary bat girls once the contest began.
“They were leading our chants,” head coach Alex Lozoya said. “It was good for them to see what the big kids are like.”
The win ensures Marble Falls of one important part of its season, Lozoya said.
“‘You don’t feel like you’re in position to play for anything, but you do,'” he said. “‘You have a chance to not share the bottom of the cellar, to not be in that final spot. Being tied for fifth sounds a whole lot better.’ I expected them to come out and compete. Overall it was a good win for our team. It was a good chance to share memories.”
And compete they did led by senior Brie Kingsbury, who hit a double with the bases loaded as part of a seven-run third inning. Natalie Bertino reached base six times. Three of those were because she was hit by a pitch. Kylie Roberts also played well.
“You can’t score runs unless you get on base,” the coach said.
And the Lady Vikings didn’t back down either, Lozoya said.
“There were aggressive. They came out swinging,” he said. “We settled down and threw strikes. Our defense showed up.”
Pitcher Marisol Ramos earned the win and got great defensive help from Kingsbury.
“Brie caught shallow balls and fly balls,” Lozoya said. “She got the last three outs of the game. I was happy for her to have that momentum. I give them Kudos for the second half of district. I’m proud of the way they performed, and it showed.”
