The Burnet High School softball team beat Jarrell 6-0 April 14 to take another step toward the District 24-4A crown.
The Lady Dawgs also had some history made as Maddi Moise got the scoring going on a solo home run in the first inning, her eighth of the season to break the program record.
“It feels great to score first and keep them coming,” she said. “It was a goal. (Former teammate) Savannah Gomez broke it last year. She told me it was my turn. She’s been supporting me all season.”
Head coach Hailey Wooten said that moment was reminiscent of the way the game started against the Lady Cougars in the district’s first round — Moise hit a solo shot with two outs for the lead.
That 1-0 lead stood until the fifth inning. A bad bounce over the Jarrell shortstop’s glove allowed the runner to reach. An infield single where McKenzie Davis beat the throw to first put two on with no outs. Moise was intentionally walked to load the bases.
Then the shortstop caught a line drive for the first out and completed the double play by throwing to third base.
“That was a great play,” Wooten said.
So with two outs and Jarrell forcing momentum to swing back its way, Burnet’s Lexie Leatherwood took it back with a single swing of the bat that sent the ball to left field to load the bases for Addie Grace Hernandez.
Hernandez swung, sending the ball down the right field line that went to the wall. She raced around the bases the with her teammates. By the end, Hernandez was on third and the bases were cleared. Kenzye Raiford hit a RBI double to bring Hernandez home.
Wooten credited Leatherwood for starting the scoring.
“I love two-out rallies,” she said. “With runners on with two outs, our big hitters have a chance of scoring them. I trust our lineup. I think my players know how important this game was. Jarrell had a chance to finish second in district with a win. They knew Jarrell was coming with everything they had.”
Sophomore pitcher Presely Crawford struck out 11 in five innings of work. Kyleigh Mott pitched the final two innings.
“We’re gearing up for playoffs,” Wooten said. “We’re going to need them both.”
Burnet ends the regular season by hosting Marble Falls at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 18, at Bulldog Diamonds.
A Lady Dawgs win will give the program the district championship.
“Every day we work towards the goal — every rep, every practice,” Moise said. “We all have to make it special.”
