Burnet softball bounces back from first district loss
The Burnet High School softball team defeated Lago Vista 20-1 April 7 in a game played a day later than scheduled because of rain. The victory came after the Lady Dawgs (1910, 6-1 District 24-4A) lost to Georgetown Gateway 4-3 April 4.
The game against Lago Vista ended after three innings.
“They all hit the ball well,” head coach Hailey Wooten said.
Journey Denton hit an in-the-park home run with 4 RBIs, while Addie Hernandez hit a double and a triple, and Maddie Moise hit two doubles.
The loss to Gateway, which ended the Lady Dawgs’ season a year ago, came down to the Lady Gators creating their own luck.
“In a game like this, one timely hit … can be the difference in the whole game,” Wooten said.
The Lady Dawgs took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Lexie Leatherwood brought Mackenzie Davis home “on a swinging bunt.” Camryn Gutherie hit a RBI double to score Leatherwood.
A base hit up the middle in the first inning allowed the Lady Gators to tie the game at 2-2.
In the third inning, Davis hit an in-the-park home run when “the centerfielder let the ball get by her,” Wooten said.
Gateway hit a two-run homer with two outs in the third inning.
Wooten noted her team didn’t get the timely hit that would have made the outcome different.
“We had several opportunities with runners on, and we couldn’t get them in,” she said.
Pitcher Presely Crawford was in the circle for both games.
Burnet welcomes Lampasas at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 11, to Bulldog Diamonds.
