Marble Falls boys golf finishes second at district, advances to regionals
The Marble Falls High School boys golf team is the District 24-4A runner-up now that the tournament finished April 3-4 to qualify for the Class 4A Region III tournament.
The Mustang Gold team of Kolton Pannell, Coby Holley, Porter Vinson, Bode Moss and Ross Oelschleger shot a two-day total of 654.
Pannell’s 78-77–155 makes him the district runner-up in the individual standings, while Moss’ 82-76–158 was good enough for third overall.
“The original goal for our Gold team was to win (the) district (championship),” head coach Ricky Blackington said. “Our first round Monday wasn’t very solid (337), so that put us in second by 10 strokes behind Lampasas. Our second round (317) on Tuesday was much better and more like what we are capable of doing on a regular basis. Even though it was better, it wasn’t enough to catch Lampasas, which had a very strong showing on Tuesday.”
Holley shot an 81-79–160 for sixth overall, while Vinson scored a 96-85–181, and Oelschleger shot a 105-101–206.
The Purple team of Ryan Nolan (99-96–195), Cade Knight (88-90–178 for a new personal best), Tyler Belk (99-122–221), Brady Trussell (105-112–217) and Ryan Valentine (97-91–188) shot a two-round total of 383-389–772.
“The original goal for the Purple team was to shoot daily team scores between 380 and 390,” Blackington said. “We did that both days. Congrats to our Purple team. Even with some ups and downs, you accomplished the goal.”
He added he knows each golfer has the ability to improve.
The Mustangs advancing comes on the heels of Lady Mustang Madison Deberard winning the girls district championship last week.
The regional tournament is April 19-20 at Bearkat Golf Course, 457 Interstate 45 in Huntsville.
“I am proud of all the hard work each of our guys has put in leading up to this district tournament,” Blackington said. “We have some young players returning next year, so we will build towards capturing a guys’ district team championship in the future.”
