The Burnet High School girls soccer team’s season is over after a 3-2 loss to Boerne High March 31 in the regional quarterfinals.
The Lady Dawgs (24-3, 12-0 District 25-4A) captured district, bi-district and area titles along with earning more wins than any team in program history.
“The best record to date,” head coach Kimberly Myhre said.
Boerne, which reached the Class 4A state semifinals in 2022, took what it thought was a commanding 3-0 lead with 10 minutes left in the match. That’s when the Lady Dawgs showed their fight, Myhre said.
Ameila Griffin scored Burnet’s first goal with an assist from Lainey Rye and Kaycie Banton scored the second with an assist from Caroline Valencia.
“These girls left every single thing on the field,” the coach said. “You truly can not ask for more heart from a team. They could have given up, and they kept on playing and fighting until the very last whistle.”
The Lady Dawgs scored 149 goals and allowed 19 during the 2023 season.
But more than the staggering stats and trophies, the team displayed the characteristics of a champion, Myhre said, thanks to veterans who wouldn’t settle.
“We are losing five incredible seniors who have set the bar high the last four years and have given everything they possibly can to this program,” she said. “We are so grateful for the time and effort they have put in.”
In turn, they are entrusting the program’s legacy to the returners and subvarsity players eager to leave their own history, Myhre added.
“We will be returning 16 varsity players next season,” she said. “These girls are hungry and are not satisfied, and I promise you they will be back.”
