Marble Falls boys soccer beats Uvalde, will play Boerne High next

The Marble Falls High School boys soccer team defeated Uvalde 4-0 March 28 in the area round of the Class 4A playoffs.

They face three-time defending state champion Boerne High in the regional quarterfinals with date, site and time still to be determined.

Uvalde’s athletic department has been competing in the memory those who died during the Robb Elementary school tragedy May 24 throughout this school year. And the Mustangs knew the task at hand, head coach Rick Hoover said.

“Everyone in Texas has a soft spot for this town, this school and this community,” he said. “We are playing a sport/game which is what we had to focus on.”

Add in that Mother Nature played a role in the start of the match, and the coach praised his players for staying in the moment.

“The boys had to lock-in and stay focused, much more than any previous game,” he said. “We had an almost two-hour weather delay, which is always difficult for the kids. On top of this, we had the compassion we all feel for Uvalde. This was an incredible mental challenge, which the boys were up for.”

Charlie Brantley got the Mustangs going by scoring an unassisted goal followed by Garrett Goggan’s goal with an assist from Max Najera for a 2-0 lead at the half.

Goggans scored the third goal thanks to an assist from Marco Almazan. And Fernando Arreguin had the final goal with an assist from Seth Parker.

Meanwhile, the Mustangs were brilliant defensively.

“Uvalde only had one shot all night,” Hoover said. “The game was much more one-sided than the score shows. The field was wet after the big storm that came through, which made it difficult to control the ball. The Mustangs had multiple opportunities to score, but for some reason were just off a bit.”
