The Burnet High School baseball team beat Georgetown Gateway 13-6 March 16 to move to 3-0 in District 24-4 play.

The Bulldogs have been scorching hot at the plate and immediately put pressure on the Gators to match them, plating four runs in the first inning.

“We started swinging it well,” head coach Russell Houston said. “When you’re able to do that, you’re to settle in and not stress.”

And though the Gators tied the game at 5-5 in the third inning, the Bulldogs kept producing runs.

Senior Tanner O’Hair and Trenton Park each hit home runs to left field while Jesse Bachmayer recorded some hits.

“We had some big hits when it’s time to drive in runs or move runners over,” Houston said. “And nobody cares about who gets it done as long as it’s a Bulldog.”

Senior pitcher Braden Ellett-Clark got the win. Junior pitcher Kade Shaw threw 2 1/3 innings, while Cooper Faris took over in the seventh.

“The big thing about that is our pitchers trust the seven dudes behind them,” the coach said. “The more times our kids make outs and make plays, the more they trust them. And they don’t have to be perfect, they can give up a hit or two. Playing great defense helps our pitchers overall.”

O’Hair is the catcher and has performed well. Houston noted the senior has spent a lot of time with the pitching staff to create a list of what each hurler likes to do.

“It’s the ability of him to get used to where the ball goes,” he said. “Every kid is different. Tanner has gotten back there and made those small adjustments. He catches balls in practice and learned where each kid, if he misses, where they’re going to miss.”

Burnet ends Spring Break with two road wins.

“It goes back to our kids concentrating on when it’s time to go and seeing the big picture and doing what they have to do to make sure they’re locked in,” Houston said. “The resiliency of our kiddos — I think our kids are in a good place mentally. They don’t care where we’re playing and who we’re playing. Our kids are able to relax and play. They’re able to depend on each other and not one person. That’s big.”

Burnet welcomes Marble Falls (3-0) Tuesday, March 21, to Bulldog Diamonds with varsity only playing at 4:30 p.m.
