Marble Falls baseball scores late to beat Georgetown Gateway
The Marble Falls High School baseball team defeated Georgetown Gateway 7-6 March 14 to remain unbeaten in District 24-4A play.
The Mustangs (2-0 District 24-4A) now turn their attention to a road game at Lago Vista at 5 p.m. Thursday, March 16. The junior varsity plays before the varsity at 3 p.m.
The Gators (1-1 in district) took a 2-0 lead in the third inning. The Mustangs scored a run in the fourth though they trailed 2-1.
Gateway got that run back in the fifth, which triggered each team matching the other run for run. Both teams scored two in the sixth inning for a 5-5 tie.
A sacrifice flyball brought a Gator home for a 6-5 lead in the seventh inning.
But the Mustangs weren’t finished. Senior Bryce Atkinson hit the game-tying RBI, while senior Evan Nickowski hit the game-winning single. Though the shortstop dove for the ball, he couldn’t make the throw to first before Nickowski reached base.
“Our kid was fast, and he beat it,” head coach Tyler Porter said.
Jake Carter (1-0 district play) was credited with the win. Atkinson was on the mound for five innings and Brady Elwartowski also pitched.
The coach offered one explanation for how the Mustangs have won back-to-back district games by a single run.
“They expect to win,” he said. “We were down 5-3 and scored two.”
Simply put, Marble Falls is getting offensive thanks to the bottom of the batting order, which is unusual for most high school teams. Currently those batting Nos 6-9 have seven hits in 14 appearances with 7 RBIs.
“They are hitting .500,” Porter said. “It’s made us better as a team. If you have a tough 6-9, that’s a good thing.”
To Porter, the victory against Gateway exemplified the team’s motto.
“Win anyway,” the coach said. “There are no excuses to not win. You feel like you should win. Our kids are very comfortable playing here (at Scearce Field). You don’t want to drop a home game.”
