Burnet baseball bats start hot, stay hot in win against Lampasas
The Burnet High School baseball team beat Lampasas 10-3 March 14 in the second District 24-4A contest for both teams.
The result means the Bulldogs (2-0 in district) remain at the top of the standings, while the Badgers (0-2) are still looking for their first district win.
“We just started out hot early,” head coach Russell Houston said. “It allows us to relax and just play.”
The Bulldogs scored all the runs they needed in the first inning by plating four and added four more in the third for an 8-0 advantage. The Badgers finally got on the scoreboard in the third inning by scoring a run and both squads scored two runs in the seventh.
Jesse Bachmayer had 2 RBIs, while Will Johnson and Jackson Crawford each had one. Noah Crawford had three hits.
“When you’re able to jump out on people early, it sets the tone,” the coach said. “It allows for a mistake here and there. There’s a balance to doing that and playing with confidence. And when you don’t have to count on one person, it definitely makes it more difficult for the opposing pitcher. That’s probably the best part about our team.”
Sophomore pitcher Matthew Valdez (2-0 in district play) earned the win with nine strikeouts in seven innings.
“He threw well,” Houston said.
Lampasas committed five errors, which Houston anticipates accounted for five unearned runs.
“They had some big errors with two outs,” he said.
District members have played two of 15 games this season, and Houston believes the Bulldogs will have to continue to play well if they want to accomplish their goals, which include challenging for the district crown and earning a playoff berth.
“There’s still a very long way to go,” he said. “At the end of the day, your goal is to win as many district games as you can. If our kids play with confidence and play the way they’re capable, I like our chances against anybody.”
