Marble Falls baseball posts 4-0 record at Del Valle tourney
The Marble Falls High School baseball team went 4-0 at the Del Valle tournament March 10-11.
The Mustangs stomped Del Valle 8-2, Manor 14-0, Hays Consolidated 11-0 and came back to beat Pflugerville Weiss 8-7.
“It was good to see competition from other schools,” head coach Tyler Porter said. “There were tough kids there. We were locked in. We were mentally tough.”
That was exemplified in the win against Weiss. Trailing 5-3, Marble Falls was determined to win. Senior Bryce Atkinson beat a throw to first base that allowed the winning runs to score.
Porter said he told his players when they were losing that they “were going to win.” Their response?
“Obviously, we’ll win,” Porter recalled hearing. “It’s confidence. And learning how to win. There’s a belief that we’re going to win the game.”
He said “Del Valle isn’t a bad team,” and the Mustangs trailed 2-0 after the first inning before scoring eight unanswered runs. Atkinson led with 2 RBIs off 3 hits. Cale Cochran and Davis Dreisbach each added an RBI. Atkinson hit a home rune.
Pitcher Jake Carter had three strikeouts in three innings while Cale Cochran had two in two innings.
The Mustangs needed only three-and-a-half innings to dispose of Manor thanks to plating four runs in the first inning, two in the second, and eight in the third. Cale Cochran led the way with 3 RBIs followed by Kyle Curtis and Brady Elwartowski with two each.
Pitcher A.J. Scovil had six strikeouts in four innings.
Against Hays, Marble Falls scored seven runs in the second inning and four in the third in a contest that ended after three-and-a-half innings. Isaias Roman, Atkinson and Dreisbach each had an RBI. PItcher Cale Cochran had three strikeouts in three innings.
“Cale Cochran is playing out of his mind,” Porter said. “He is legitimately hitting .750. He’s on fire. Evan Nickowski is hitting .500. Every time you look up, he’s on base. Our seniors have been quality for years. Those kids have earned it.”
Marble Falls (1-0) returns to District 24-4A play by welcoming Georgetown Gateway (0-1) at 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 14, and traveling to face Lago Vista (1-0) Thursday, March 16.
“We had a couple of arms that didn’t throw this weekend,” Porter said. “When we’re throwing strikes and playing defense, we’re in every game.”
