Burnet boys soccer loses to Lago Vista, locks in district seeding
The Burnet High School boys soccer team lost to Lago Vista 8-3 March 7.
“This was an important match as it decided third place in District (24-4A),” head coach Benjamin Boorman said. “Lago celebrated (its) senior night and (was) absolutely ready to play from the opening whistle. It was clear that this was going to be a track meet and a slug fest from the beginning”
The Vikings scored within three minutes of the match’s start and added their second goal five minutes later.
“it was looking bleak,” Boorman said.
Then Victor Aviles pushed up the field, and “it took three Vikings to slow him down, the coach said.
“As we got the ball on that side, Hector Arredondo almost converted a free kick from 35 yards out that was deflected out for a corner,” he added. “Hector took the ball and put a perfect cross in for an own goal by the Vikings.”
The Vikings scored on two counter attacks in the next 10 minutes for a 4-1 advantage.
After a free kick bounced around at the top of the box, Jahir Benitez took a lob over the goal keeper to the back corner of the net for Burnet’s second goal.
Four minutes before the half. Anthony Perez found Bruno Hernandez on a throw-in a header goal to trim Lago Vista’s lead to 4-3.
In the second half, the Vikings “continued to be physical and kick long balls to their star forward,” Boorman said.
He finished the match with five goals.
The outcome means Burnet finished fourth in the district race.
“It was a disappointing loss and pretty much seals our fate of playing defending state champion Boerne in the first round of the playoffs,” Boorman said.
Burnet welcomes Marble Falls at 7 p.m. for the final regular season home match Friday, March 10, and will honor its seniors.
“Please come out and root these boys on,” Boorman said. “They have worked so hard during their high school careers. Fortunately, this will not be our last game, as we head to playoffs after spring break.”
Information will be sent out soon for playoff T-shirts.
