The Burnet High School boys soccer team slipped past Florence 3-2 Feb. 28 to win both contests in District 25-4A.
“Varsity was short handed, and we took this opportunity to let boys who haven’t gotten that much playing time this year get in,” head coach Benjamin Boorman said. “I was pleased that the standard of play did not diminish.”
Florence took advantage of some miscommunication by the Bulldogs in the first half for a 1-0 lead.
“Once (my players) cleaned that up, they played spectacular shutdown defense,” Boorman said.
Eric Hernandez scored first off a crossing pass from Dwight Lopez, who was recently promoted from the junior varsity, to tie the game at 1-1.
Lopez delivered another beautiful kick to Dennis Marquina’s head for the second goal.
Eric Huerta placed the ball on the back post for goal No. 3, which came from a blocked shot of Hector Arredondo’s great attempt, the coach said.
The Burnet junior varsity lost to Florence 2-0, though Boorman noted some outstanding play by the Bulldogs.
Bruce Gonzalez had some nice runs down the line and got a few shots, he said.
“Genesis Ceron played down this game to give Dwight Lopez a chance to play varsity,” the coach said. “Genesis played well and had a few close opportunities to convert goals. Julius Nava was a standout in the back four, running down and stopping counter attacks.”
The Burnet varsity will travel to Lago Vista Friday, March 3, for a doubleheader with the girls. The Lady Dawgs play at 5 p.m. and the Bulldogs follow at 7 p.m.
