The Marble Falls High School boys golf team split into two squads to compete at the Lampasas Invitational Feb. 7.
The Mustangs’ gold team shot a 316 and needed to win a playoff to win the team division, while the purple team shot a 394.
“Our team won the playoff against Brownwood,” head coach Rick Blackington said. “Our team went 1 under par on hole 1 and Brownwood went 6 over par. Our guys dominated under playoff pressure. So we brought home some hardware and proved to ourselves that we can compete with anyone if we play to our capabilities.”
Coby Holley led the gold team with a 76 to finish second in the individual standings, while Kolton Pannell totaled a 79 to finish fifth after losing a scorecard playoff for fourth place. Porter Vinson added an 80, Bode Moss shot an 81, and Ross Oelschleger totaled an 83.
Cade Knight led the purple team by shooting a 95, while Brady Trussell scored a 98, Ryan Nolan shot a 100, Tyler Belk scored a 101, and Timothy Fogle scored a 110.
Six Mustangs earned their best scores so far this season: Belk, Knight, Fogle, Oelschleger, Trussell and Vinson.
“Our goal for the gold team was to shoot between 312 and 316. They did it,” Blackington said. “Our goal for the purple team was to shoot between 391 and 394. They did it. Today was a good day. We set goals for each player and for each team. Almost every goal was met today. Super proud of each guy. Let’s keep up the hard work, keep grinding each day to get a little better and set our sights on winning district.”
The Mustangs will play in the Llano Invitational at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14, at the Llano River Golf Course.
