The Burnet High School boys basketball team defeated Lampasas 55-45 Jan. 27 to remain tied for second in the District 24-4A standings to end the first round of play.

The Bulldogs decided to the attack the basket by going for high-percentage shots thanks to working the ball to the inside to posts Garner Krause and Aidan Holcomb. The two contributed 12 points.

“(They) really helped our scoring head coach,” Roy Kiser said. “Offensively, we did a good job of attacking the middle of the defense, which gave us lay-up opportunities which in turn opened up the 3-point line.”

Defensively, Burnet limited the Badgers’ scoring opportunities and held them to very few multiple shots per possession thanks to a key change that surprised Lampasas.

“We changed our normal defensive scheme based on what we saw on video,” Kiser said. “Without too much detail, we asked our guys to change how they guarded the ball, and they did a pretty good job of it. We played good defense and got some stops.”

The victory was a great rebound after losing to Marble Falls Jan. 24.

“After coaching for 31 years, I have realized that maybe the most important thing I try to teach my teams is how to win and how to lose,” Kiser said. “We tell our teams every year to never get too high celebrating a win or too low emotionally if we lose. I had to listen to my own advice after (Jan. 24), so we addressed the reasons we lost and moved on to preparing for the next game.”

While he was pleased with the win, the coach noted the Bulldogs can still get better.

“We still aren’t putting the ball in the hole like we are capable of doing and we have to deal with the fact that our offense just hasn’t been consistent this year,” he said.

Burnet will travel to play Georgetown Gateway. The game, which was scheduled to be played Jan. 31 but couldn’t because of the weather, has been tentatively rescheduled for 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2, for the varsities only.
