The Burnet High School girls soccer team beat Austin Achieve 7-1 Jan. 24 to start District 25-4A play.
“We scored four goals in 10 minutes,” head coach Kimberly Myhre said. “We had a lot of fun. I made them work in a lot of stuff.”
The Lady Dawgs (11-2-1) had multiple players contribute to the scoring: Amelia Griffin and Sam Gaylord each scored two while Kaycie Banton, Brook Oliva and Caroline Valencia each scored one. Lainey Rye and Banton each had two assists, while Reagan Shipley, Taylor Petty and Valencia each had one.
The lone Achieve goal was off a free kick aided by the wind.
The victory was a good recovery after finishing the pre-district season with a 2-1 loss to Brownwood Jan. 21 and a 4-2 loss to Wimberley Jan. 17.
“Against Brownwood, we came out flat with no energy,” Myhre said. “Brownwood came out with energy and heart.”
Wimberley led 3-0 at the half,
“But we came out hot the first 10 minutes and scored two goals,” the coach said. “Had that (Burnet) team showed up the whole game, it would have been a different story. (My players) know that.”
While no one wants to lose, Myhre believes the setbacks came at the right time.
“We have to go out every single game with energy and heart,” she said. “No one is going to roll over for us. Our soccer program has had success and we get (the opponents’) best. I tell my players, ‘You can do this. You have to want it.’ I hope we can keep it going. We lost before it mattered (in district and postseason play).”
Burnet welcomes Jarrell Friday, Jan. 27, to Bulldog Field. The boys junior varsity plays at 4 p.m., the girls varsity at 5:30 p.m. and the boys varsity at 7:30 p.m.
