The Burnet High School boys soccer team lost to Austin Achieve 7-0 Jan. 24 in the District 25-4A opener.
“Austin Achieve’s varsity was as good as advertised, as they had just come off of a tournament win and beat Fredericksburg 5-0,” Bulldogs head coach Benjamin Boorman said. “(Fredericksburg is) the same team we lost 6-0 to.”
Boorman noted the Bulldogs had chances to score in the first half. But a strong wind was another opponent both teams faced.
“We had the wind and had a few shots and corners that we couldn’t convert,” he said.
One key adjustment was moving sophomore Victor Aviles to striker.
“We really started to put pressure on them,” the coach said. “However, just as the cold front started to blow in, so did the strength of Achieve.”
The Polar Bears scored three goals in the first half. A penalty kick and an own goal contributed to the 7-0 final.
Burnet goalie Matthew Aguayo had more than 15 saves during the contest.
Boorman pointed out the Bulldogs played with the heart and effort Burnet is known for.
“I was proud of the boys as all players on the field and on the bench never lost their fight and desire,” he said. “Austin Achieve was definitely the toughest team we have faced this year.”
The Burnet junior varsity lost to Austin Achieve 3-0.
“(Burnet) played hard with great energy,” Boorman said. “Orlando Hernandez made some fantastic saves. Luis Sanchez captained the team and kept them organized. Yosvanny Ramirez is really shaping up to be a really good soccer player who can possess the ball and find passes.”
Burnet welcomes Jarrell Friday, Jan. 27, to Bulldog Field. The subvarsity plays at 4 p.m., the girls varsity at 5:30 p.m. and the boys varsity at 7:30 p.m.
