The Burnet High School boys basketball team beat Lago Vista 42-28 Jan. 20 to move to a four-way tie for first place in District 24-4A.
The Bulldogs (12-13, 2-1) played the Vikings to an 8-8 tie at the end of the first quarter and led 18-15 at the half, and 23-16 going into the fourth quarter.
“Once we took the lead in the second quarter, we never trailed,” head coach Roy Kiser said, “but we struggled to score for awhile. Because of that, it was one of those games where every basket had extra value.”
The Vikings’ primary defense was a 2-3 zone, and the Bulldogs simply stuck to their offensive attack to outscore them 19-12 in the final stanza.
“We just continued to run our zone offense and trusted that we would eventually make some shots, which we did,” Kiser said. “It was a combination of both inside and outside shooting plus making 10 of 12 free throws in the fourth quarter to extend the lead.”
Meanwhile, the Bulldogs’ defensive intensity never dropped and paved the way for success.
“I was very pleased with how we defended Lago Vista,” the coach said. “They are very athletic, but we caused 25 turnovers that really helped during our offensive slump.”
Junior guard Baylor Dawes led with 9 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists followed by senior guard Lane Murphy with 11 points, and junior guard Jacob Atkinson with 7.
Burnet welcomes Marble Falls to The Doghouse Tuesday, Jan. 24, and hosts Lampasas Friday, Jan. 27. The junior varsity plays at 5 p.m., the freshmen at 6:15 p.m. and the varsity at 8 p.m.
“It is important to be ready for the next two games since they are rivalry games,” Kiser said. “Kids get excited for these types of games, but we have to be focused on how to defeat our opponent. We have a great opportunity this week with both games being at home.”
