The Marble Falls High School boys basketball team defeated Lampasas 58-51 Jan. 13 in the first game of District 24-4A
This is the first district win for the Mustangs since Jan. 5, 2021 against Georgetown East View 61-49 as members of District 25-5A.
“It was a great way to start the district season, to get a win and in front of our home crowd,” head coach Travis Crain said. “I was proud of how well we did. We had a lot of nerves, we’re a young team. This is our first district game, our first home district game against a team that’s relatively close to us. We battled through the nerves.”
The Mustangs led from start to finish, taking a 17-15 advantage after the first quarter, 30-22 at the intermission, and 44-37 headed into the final stanza. Marble Falls won two of four quarters thanks to outscoring the Badgers 17-15 in the first and 13-7 in the second. Lampasas won the second half 29-28.
“It was really in line with what we can do,” Crain said about the four quarters of play. “We never trailed.”
The Badgers still felt they had a chance toward the end of the contest, but senior Josh Miller took their hope by knocking down a couple of free throws.
“I was happiest for Josh,” Crain said. “He helped us pull away and seal it. That kid came through and played so hard. He was flying around, making things happen for us. I’m super happy for him. He was big with energy and rebounding and steals.”
The other important offensive fact was the Mustangs received scoring from just about everyone who entered the contest, he added, led by junior guard Davis Dreisbach, who dropped in 18 points, followed by sophomore guard Tidus Willie, who added 16, and junior guard Kody Smith scored 9.
“We only had one kid who did not score,” Crain said. “We were balanced.”
He noted the Mustangs outrebounded the Badgers 44-28 with 22 of the rebounds on the offensive end.
“Our energy was phenomenal and so was our effort,” the coach said. “We’re making things happen and creating opportunities.”
Marble Falls travels to Lago Vista Tuesday, Jan. 17, in a double-header with the Lady Mustangs. The boys varsity plays at 8 p.m.
