The Marble Falls High School boys soccer team defeated Comal Canyon Lake 5-0 Jan. 10 after going 3-0 at the Georgetown Governor’s Cup Jan. 5-7.

Against Canyon Lake, the Mustangs (5-0) led 2-0 at the break thanks to Garrett Goggans, who scored both goals and added a third in the second half. Other goals came from Esteban Dominguez and Marco Almazan.

“It was good play all the way around,” head coach Rick Hoover said. “Garrett has been hurt. This is his first game back. He’s a difference maker for sure.”

Hoover said one reason he wanted to face the Hawks is because they are a possible playoff opponent.

“The lopsided win is the least important part,” he said. “I scheduled this game to get a peek in the window of that district. I can see how they do against the rest of them.”

At the Governor’s Cup, Marble Falls beat Brownwood 3-2 and Austin Crockett 6-2 after earning a 1-0 victory against Salado.

“I thought it was very good,” Hoover said. “We played three quality teams. Crockett is a Class 5A Austin ISD school that’s hit or miss. (That school district) can field a really good squad some years. Brownwood is a really good, strong program and goes two or three rounds in the playoffs. And Salado goes to the regional or state tournament. It gave us a good measuring stick and barometer.”

The Mustangs will face more measuring sticks when they compete at the Bastrop tournament Thursday-Saturday, Jan. 12-14. Marble Falls faces Manor New Tech at 1:45 p.m. and Austin Harmony at 6:45 p.m. on Thursday, Temple at 6:45 p.m. Friday, and Bastrop or Lockhart at 10 a.m. Saturday. The third place match and the championship are at 2 p.m. Saturday. All games are at Bastrop High School.

“Our goal is to keep playing quality soccer and keep the kids healthy,” Hoover said. “We want to win, but we don’t want to win at all costs. We’ve never won a district championship. That’s what we’re focused on this year. We want to accomplish what has never been done here.”
