Smoking For Jesus football continues winning streak
The Smoking For Jesus football team didn’t need late rallies to defeat San Antonio Jubilee Oct. 21, winning 55-6 in a contest that ended with six minutes left in the third quarter.
The Eagles (4-5, 2-0) earned their third win in a row.
“We’re on a great winning streak,” defensive coordinator Boo Maxwell said. “The boys are learning and gelling together more and more as we get closer to the playoffs. We had a mature effort on both sides of the ball. We stepped up on offense and defense and had a great game.”
Maxwell noted Jubilee’s defense lined up to stop the Eagles’ rushing attack. So he told his athletes he was going to call plays that would work but may be new to them.
“I wanted them to focus and execute on plays that help us develop more as a team ” he said. “It was definitely a great team effort. I opened up the playbook a lot more. We tried to see how we could adjust. They really stepped up.”
He noted seniors Isaac Legier and Jonathan Frazier, junior Connor Kitchens and sophomore Myron Glaspie wouldn’t be denied.
“They stepped up in the run game,” Maxwell said. “Isaac had a huge run game. Connor broke four or five tackles on a long run and took it to the house. It was amazing.”
Benjamin Frazier and senior Bryson Culver were forces defensively, the coach added.
“Benjamin had tackles and had big stops on third and fourth down,” he said. “Bryson brought a lot of pressure from the defensive end.”
Maxwell couldn’t praise the players enough for trusting the plays and having the self-confidence and belief in each other to run away with the win.
“Everybody played well on offense and defense,” he said. “(Jubilee) was really putting a lot of people inside. They were stacking up the line. I made some adjustments because of the way they were attacking us.”
Next up is a home game Bulverde Gloria Deo Academy (6-2, 3-1) at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28.
