The Burnet High School volleyball team defeated Georgetown Gateway to break a tie for first place in District 24-4A Oct. 4.
The Lady Dawgs won 25-19,18-25, 26-24, 19-25, 15-8.
“The varsity girls came out on a mission and kept control of most of the first set,” head coach Crystal Shipley said. “Gateway made some adjustments in the second and took over the momentum. Our Lady Dawgs continued to fight and made adjustments of their own to win a close set three. Set four went to the Lady Gators to send us into a fifth set. Our Lady Dawgs came out on fire and took the lead early. They finished tough even after adversity hit them, and I could not be more proud. Thank you to all the middle school girls, coaches and the huge crowd. Your support is very much appreciated.”
The huge crowd was the result of the high school program recognizing and honoring Burnet Middle School volleyball coaches and players and volleyball officials. Each high school athlete was assigned a middle school player and gave her a gift.
The Burnet freshmen also beat Gateway and the junior varsity lost a tough three-set match.
“Our freshman team continues to be dominant, not losing a set in a district match,” Shipley said. “Our JV team battled a tough Gateway team. They fought hard and had to overcome some tough rallies to take it to 3; it just didn’t go our way in the end.”
Next up is a road trip to Jarrell, 1100 FM 487, Friday, Oct. 7. The varsity plays at 5 p.m. and the subvarsities follow.
