The Faith Academy of Marble Falls volleyball team began District 3-3A play of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools with a loss to Round Rock Christian 0-3 Sept. 1.
Still, head coach Adrienne Pabon noted she saw some positives from her players.
“Any time we play someone at a higher level, my girls do things they’ve never done before,” she said.
Case in point was setter Kendall Mason, who was unafraid to defend the net.
“My setter is tiny,” Pabon said. “She blocked one of the other hitters. It was her first block of the season.”
Pabon pointed out that one way teams improve is to see what other squads are doing and facing other great players. Round Rock Christian seniors Savannah Johnson and Kelli Northup committed to play for the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.
“They are competing against great private schools with players committed to play in college,” she said. “It lets them know it can be done, they can do what they make up their minds to do. To see another private school have the athletic ability, I think lit a fire. I’m all about lighting fires.”
The Lady Flames welcome Waco Bishop Reicher to The Fire Pit, 3151 RR 1431 East, Tuesday, Sept. 6. The junior varsity plays at 5 p.m. with the varsity following.
“We are working overtime to establish the volleyball program at Faith Academy,” Pabon said. “Every practice, every touch, every serve, every time we make contact with the volleyball we’re trying to take advantage of every opportunity. The girls are working really hard. I want to catch and bring out that competitive nature in each of them.”
