Burnet volleyball shows its mental toughness in win against Blanco

It’s almost as if there wasn’t an offseaon. The Burnet High School volleyball team began the 2022 season with a win against Blanco 19-25, 25-21, 16-25, 25-12, 16-14 Aug. 9 in front of a packed crowd at The Doghouse. Students, alumnae, family members and fans were treated to outstanding play from both teams, Burnet head coach Crystal Shipley said. “It was up and down the entire match but when it clicked, it clicked,” she said. “I’m so proud of them for not giving up when it would have been easy…

Marble Falls volleyball has arsenal of new ways to score

For weeks, Marble Falls High School head volleyball coach Kait Goertz has been saying this 2022 team is different from the ones that stepped out on the court in the past. A big reason is because of the preparation the Lady Mustangs put in months earlier leading up to the season opener against Kyle Lehman Aug. 9 that has led to a confidence the players now have. And though Marble Falls (0-1) lost to the Lady Lobos 19-25, 22-25, 10-25, Goertz said she saw plenty of positives that reinforced what…

Burnet football shows retention in its intrasquad scrimmage

The end of the first week of training camp comes with a reward for the Burnet High School football team and its fans – an intrasquad scrimmage Aug. 6. Head coach Bryan Wood noted it was the first day of hitting for the Bulldogs. “We were very limited on how much live,” he said. “We want depth, but you don’t want to beat up on each other.” Wood was most interested in seeing the athletes movements in every play. Do they know their assignments? Are they moving naturally because they…

Marble Falls volleyball adds more complexity to its offense

One day before the start of the 2022 season has the Marble Falls High School volleyball team feeling very optimistic. That’s because head coach Kait Goertz enjoyed what she saw from her Lady Mustangs in back-to-back scrimmages at Bastrop Cedar Creek Aug. 5 and at Wimberley Aug. 6 to cap the first week of two-a-days. Marble Falls welcomes Kyle Lehman on Tuesday, Aug. 9, to Max Copeland Gym, 2101 Mustang Drive, for the season opener. The sub varsities play at 5:30 p.m., while the varsity takes the court at 6:30…

Marble Falls football shows encouraging signs as first week ends

The Marble Falls High School football team finished its first week of training camp Aug. 6 in full pads that included going through the playbook and hitting. The Mustangs had numerous players in various positions, none bigger than junior Brian Beltran who lined up at tight end and caught a long touchdown pass that fired up the offense. Until that point, the defense was in the backfield making tackles or showed the discipline to contain and not allow the slot-T offense to find its rhythm. Head coach Brian Herman noted…

Those votes electrified attendees, coaches and the athletes. “There’s tingling in my arms,” club president Shannon Roberts said. “I’ve never seen that type of excitement in the room. We have goals, and this is what we do as a booster club.” That is take care of the student-athletes by assisting coaches in helping them obtain equipment and other needs to…

Burnet football’s Moms Night Out gives participants a better understanding of the sport

A new group of athletes emerged from the meeting room of the Burnet Consolidated Independent School District field house Aug. 4 determined to learn even more about the game of football from those who know it best – the Bulldog coaches and players themselves. The new group — more than 60 mothers of the current players — had visited Bulldog Field numerous times, but rarely did they understand some of the basic concepts of the sport such as the positions, what the players and coaches do at practices, and why…

Smoking For Jesus Eagles’ motivation for a three-peat shows in their attendance

The end of practice Aug. 4 wasn’t what the Smoking For Jesus Ministry School’s football staff wanted to see. So new offensive coordinator Russ Roberts asked the players to get back in their formations to run one more play. With the intensity kicked up, the Eagles displayed what the coaches wanted: movements where every player knew where to go and who to block, a toss to the running back that hit him in stride and allowed him to quickly read where to go, and a defense that fought through the…

Marble Falls Mustangs will discover their ‘dudes’ in the next few weeks

This August is unlike any other for the Marble Falls High School football program because of the attention paid to the Mustangs that hasn’t been witnessed since the David Denney days of the 1990s. Austin television stations have attended practice and Craig Way of 104.9 The Horn interviewed Herman Aug. 2 to get the latest on a program that posted a 16-7 record, including three victories in the playoffs, the last two seasons. In short, the Mustangs have earned the interest from others outside of the Highland Lakes because of…
