Burnet volleyball earns bronze at tourney, gets more than wins
A stellar 2021 season opened doors for better competition and memories from a road trip that will last long after the Burnet High School volleyball players’ eligibility ends.
The Lady Dawgs (9-5) accepted an invitation to compete at the inaugural Tournament on the Bay in Bay City Aug. 19-20 where they captured the bronze medal thanks to posting a 5-1 record. Outside hitter MaeSyn Gay and middle blocker Zaria Solis, who are both juniors, were named to the all-tournament team.
Burnet defeated Mabank 25-20, 24-26, 15-14 for third place and lost to Class 6A-member Richardson 14-25, 17-25. Other wins came against Wharton, 25-20, 25-15; Van Vleck 25-15, 25-9; Laredo St. Augustine 25-21, 13-25, 15-8; and Orangefield 25-15, 25-22.
Head coach Crystal Shipley said the trip had several purposes. On the court, it served as a gauge for how much the Lady Dawgs have learned in almost a month of two-a-days and competition and to help them develop better chemistry. Off the court, it allowed the players to get to know one another better since they didn’t know anyone else but their teammates.
“This trip allowed relationships to grow, trust to build and memories to last a lifetime,” Shipley said.
Burnet lost to Comal Davenport 17-25, 12-25, 26-24, 18-25 on Aug. 22.
