The recent success of the Marble Falls Middle School boys soccer team and the addition of baseball illustrates what Marble Falls Independent School District athletics director Brian Herman, who also serves as the head football coach, wants for the department. “We’re all striving to have our head coaches as a presence with the middle school coaches as much as you can,” he said. Long-time athletics director and coach Russell Roberts is donning the red and black of the Smoking For Jesus Ministry School Eagles. Roberts, who is most familiar to Highland Lakes sports fans as the football and boys track and field coach at Faith Academy, decided to become part of Eagles head coach Charles Frazier Sr.’s staff in early April. This is the final week of the 2021-22 school year and that means saying good-bye to some athletes who left their marks on their programs. Defenses shine in final night of Burnet-Llano 7-on-7 series

The Burnet and Llano football programs played their final May evening of 7-on-7 on May 23 highlighted by the defenses. While balls were overthrown, underthrown and dropped by both varsity teams, the defenses had their share of batted down passes, knockaways and interceptions. Because of a lightning delay, the two squads played a total of two games. The first ended in a 12-12 tie, while the other was a 21-6 Llano win. While the scores look fine, it was the manner in which the Yellow Jackets competed that caught the…

Navy getting a ‘superstar’ in Marble Falls High’s Castro

Four years ago, few could imagine that Marble Falls High School’s Javier Castro, Jr. would be entering the Navy. But the senior is doing just that after impressing Navy personnel in tests, including the U.S. Military Fitness Test, which is part of the enlistment process. That’s a far cry from where he started when, as a freshman who showed up for the first day of cross country head coach Chris Schrader’s practice, Castro was the only boy who didn’t remove his shirt in front of his male teammates. “He weighed…

Faith Academy athletics adds more milestones to banners

Saying the Faith Academy of Marble Falls athletics department experienced a banner year in 2021-22 doesn’t begin to describe the success. The Flames were undefeated in district play en route to titles in football, basketball, baseball and track and field. They repeated as the Class 2A state track and field champions. The department earned an individual state title in tennis thanks to the doubles team of Ryan Delmonico and Jaden Turrentine. The Lady Flames also enjoyed great seasons in district play. They were tied for second in volleyball and basketball,…

Marble Falls High School senior runner Sam Valdez sat at a table surrounded by four years of hard work and accomplishments, waiting for his name to be called to sign his National Letter of Intent. With family members in the double digits in attendance, Valdez couldn’t help but think of three people who were there in spirit — grandfathers Roy Atkinson and Gilbert Valdez and a great-grandmother. “Their passing was the biggest push for me to do better,” he said. Valdez is attending Concordia University to be a cross country…

During the annual Meet the Mustangs introductory pep rally in August 2018, Rick Hoover, who was the athletics director, announced the athletics department added another sport — swimming — thanks to sophomore Landry Stewart and freshman Taylor Ashbaugh. Smoking for Jesus sports department shifts leagues

The Smoking for Jesus Minstry School’s athletics department has changed high school leagues. The private school moved to the Texas Association of Independent Athletic Organizations, which happened after the basketball season ended. The department was previously a member of the Texas Christian Athletic League where the Eagles had tremendous success. The football team reached the league’s six-man state championship game in 2019, 2020 and 2021 and won back-to-back titles in 2020 and 2021. The basketball team won the state title of the 2021-22 season. But success wasn’t enough to keep…
