Several Burnet softball players named to all-district teams

District 19-4A coaches selected several Burnet High School softball players to all-district teams, Lady Dawgs head coach Hailey Wooten announced.

First team all-district Lady Dawgs are Savannah Gomez, McKenzie Davis and Lanee McCurry. Wooten noted district coaches saw these three come through at crucial times throughout the district season.

“Savannah hit nearly .500 in district,” the coach said. “Lanee got a base hit in almost every district game. McKenzie could slap on both sides. This was her first year to slap from the left side, and she did very well. She has a lot of speed for slapping and you have to put the ball in play. She practiced it a lot and got really good at it.”

Second team all-district members are Camrynn Guthrie and Maddi Moise, while honorable mention honors went to Kyleigh Mott, Addie Grace Hernandez and Kenzye Raiford. In addition, Wooten was named co-coach of the year. Wooten said each player was worthy of moving up but coaches limited the number of players on each team.

Guthrie was the team’s catcher, who set the defense and was dangerous as a batter.

“She came through a few times,” Wooten said. “She’s one of those players who no one wanted to play. Maddi was our designated player. She was big time at the plate. Kylie was our pitcher and a good batter. She had a good year at the plate. Addie was always key. She made good plays at third base and improved her play overall. Raiford is a hard worker and did well at second base. Her bat was better this year than last year.”

Academic all-district honors went to Abi Aguillon, Camyle Bengsch, Presley Crawford, Elyse De Arcos, MaeSyn Gay, Lyndee Harless, Olivia Robles, Yareli Vega, Rylea Whitus, Davis, Hernandez, Gomez, Guthrie, McCurry, Moise, Mott and Raiford.

As for co-coach of the year, Wooten took it in stride.

“In games I think (the other head coaches) felt like I could bring something out in my kids,” she said. “They saw a lot of fight in them.”

The coach commended her players for their play, adding she saw plenty of Lady Dawgs who played at an all-district level.

“We’re happy with what we got,” Wooten said. “It’s hard when you’re the fifth place team and can’t get the superlatives. We were in a tough district, and that’s how it works. We had many kids who were deserving.”
