Lady Flames win playoff game thanks to great start to the contest
Few people may have given the Faith Academy of Marble Falls softball team a chance against Plano Coram Deo in a Class 2A playoff game May 6. But the Lady Flames didn’t pay any attention.
Instead, they arrived with the intention of getting a win and set the tone immediately in a 13-11 victory for what most believe can’t be more than the program’s second playoff win ever.
Next up is Pflugerville Concordia, a district foe that beat Faith twice in the regular season. The game is set for a 6 p.m. start Tuesday, May 10, at the Taylor Regional Park and Sports Complex, 210 Carlos G. Parker Blvd. Northwest in Taylor. It is a one-game, winner-take-all format.
Against Coram Deo, the Lady Flames, who were the visitors, put two runs on the board in the first inning, three in the second, and four in the third for a 9-0 advantage by the middle of the third inning.
“We started out very strong,” Ferguson said. “That is what sprung us forward.”
Though Coram Deo plated two runs in the third inning, Faith responded with two in the fifth for an 11-2 lead. That allowed the Lady Flames to withstand the opponent outscoring them 9-2 in the final two-and-a-half innings.
Both teams committed seven errors, but Faith had 19 hits to Coram Deo’s 12. Faith sophomore pitcher Jaedyn Hart allowed seven earned runs and gave up five walks while striking out four. Ferguson also commended catcher Ashlynn Ferguson for her work behind the plate.
“Jaedyn was great. She was strong and fought the whole time,” the coach said. “Our catcher has to do the work, too, to get the outs or hold them back. They work as a team. They came through and were able to talk to each other and become one.”
Meanwhile, the Lady Flames got only one walk the entire contest. Mackenzie Ahrlett had 4 RBIs, while Hart helped her own cause thanks to 2 RBIs, and Avery Floyd, MacKenzie Fromberg, Cameron Mathis and Hadley Shipley each had 1 RBI.
“We have quite a few strong hitters,” Ferguson said. “And some who do what we needed. Everybody on the team got us a hit. Everybody put the ball in play.”
