Mustangs push Eagles in another one-run district contest

A pitching change and timely hitting with runners in scoring position helped Georgetown High defeat the Marble Falls High School baseball team 5-4 April 12. “The start was great,” Marble Falls head coach Tyler Porter said of his team. “Our Achilles’ heel is we always seem to give some back. That was one of the most complete games we’ve played.” The Mustangs (5-12, 1-8 District 25-5A) couldn’t have started the game better. Pitcher Bryson Atkinson forced the Eagles (19-3, 7-2) to go 3 up, 3 down in the first inning…

Faith earns district championships again with decisive wins

Going into the District 3-2A track and field meet of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools April 11, Faith Academy of Marble Falls was the favorite to continue a tradition head coach Steve McCannon doesn’t take for granted — winning the championships. The Flames took 14 of the 17 gold medals, including in the 4×200-meter relay and in the 400 meters, to earn 271 points for their fourth district championship. The Lady Flames earned 240.5 points en route to their third consecutive district title and 12th overall. The…

Flames enjoy another lopsided victory in shortened contest

San Marcos Hill Country hosted senior night before the start of its baseball game against Faith Academy of Marble Falls April 8, so the Flames braced for the Rams’ best effort. Needless to say, Hill Country found few answers thanks to sophomore pitcher Kade Shaw, who led the Flames (5-2, 3-0 District 3-2A Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools) to a 16-0 win in a contest that ended after three innings. Shaw had an in-park grand slam and finished with 5 RBIs. Carter Fromberg and Dylan Offutt each had…

Lady Gators (2-5( freshman pitcher Chloe Ellis struck out 10 in seven complete innings against the Lady Dawgs (18-7, 4-3 District 19-4A) . “They have a great pitcher,” Lady Dawgs head coach Hailey Wooten said. “We didn’t see her the first time we played them until the end of the game. We were able to score six runs off that (other) pitcher.” While Wooten complimented Gateway’s pitching and defense, she noted the Lady Dawgs also didn’t…

Weekend losses reveal important traits for the Bulldogs

Though the Burnet High School baseball team suffered back-to-back losses April 8-9, head coach Russell Houston pointed out the differences he believes are key for the Bulldogs as they turn their attention to the final weeks of the regular season. The Bulldogs (8-9-1, 5-4 District 19-4A) lost to Austin McCallum 11-8 April 9, a day after a 10-0 loss to Georgetown Gateway. Top of the list in the differences between the two contests can be found in the first inning. In both contests, Burnet gave up four runs. But against…

Welcome to this weekly column where readers will find a summary of sports across the region and the impressions left on the writer. It’s the Burnet High School girls soccer team against Bay City in the Class 4A Region III semifinals. The contest kicks off at 11 a.m. Friday, April 8, in Katy. Bay City, like Lumberton and Lake Belton, are district champions. But don’t discount the Lady Dawgs. Here’s why. Burnet…

Flames’ dominance is because of solid pitching, explosive hitting

The Faith Academy of Marble Falls baseball team is continuing to put up statistics that are leading to lopsided victories and shortened contests. The latest was a 16-1 win against Bryan St. Joseph Catholic School on April 1 after the Flames (4-2, 2-0 Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools) beat Bryan Allen Academy by the same 16-1 score March 25. In both contests, sophomore pitcher Kade Shaw was on the mound. Against St. Joseph, Shaw struck out 10 of the 15 batters he faced, including the three at the…

Becker to swap MFalls purple & gold for HSU purple & yellow

After leading the Marble Falls High School football team to the 2020 and 2021 playoffs, senior quarterback Jake Becker will suit up for Hardin-Simmons University in fall 2022. Playing college football was a goal for the son of Krystal and Matt Becker, who was the Mustangs quarterback in the mid 1990s, and passed his love of the sport to his son. The younger Becker’s favorite part is the teamwork football requires. “I grew up playing it and loving it,” he said. “I genuinely enjoy being around everybody, the environment it…
