The Mustangs outlast the Patriots to win wild, wild contest

The Marble Falls High School baseball team earned its first District 25-5A road win of the season en route to sweeping Georgetown East View April 26.

The Mustangs (9-13, 4-9) beat the Patriots 17-16 where Marble Falls had 11 hits and four errors to the Patriots’ 12 hits and seven errors. Marble Falls previously beat East View 9-8 April 1.

“It was an ugly game,” Mustangs head coach Tyler Porter said of the rematch. “We continue to not hang our heads and quit.”

East View took a 2-0 lead in the first inning only to see Marble Falls plate nine runs in the top of the second. Then the Patriots answered with two runs in the bottom half of the second inning and six in the third inning for a 10-9 lead.

The Mustangs responded in the fourth inning with two runs and six in the sixth inning for a 17-10 advantage. But East View scored six runs in the seventh inning. Mustangs pitcher Brady Elwartowski struck out the final batter for the victory.

While both teams committed errors, Porter noted the free bases were a big key to the run production.

“We had more errors than in the past few games,” he said. “There were also more walks on both pitching staffs. At least half of our runs were unearned.”

Meanwhile, Porter used four pitchers. Elwartowski was credited with the win thanks to striking out four batters in 3.2 innings.

Elwartowski led the Mustangs with 3 RBIs, while Bryce Atkinson and Jake Becker each had 2 hits.

The coach commended his players for their mental outlook throughout the contest, calling it the biggest area of improvement. That’s evident by their 4-4 record in the last eight district games. Before, the Mustangs would have mentally quit and not fought back.

“Every year it’s gotten better,” he said. “They expect to find ways to win a game and we can build on that for next year.”

Marble Falls, which is on a three-game winning streak, ends the season at 7 p.m. Friday, April 29, against Leander Rouse (9-4, currently tied for second in the district), at Scearce Field, 2101 Mustang Drive. Seniors Jake Becker, Hudson McBryde, Jon “Gouda” Zamarippa and Jett Zurita will be honored before the game.
