MFalls has six athletes advancing to the area track and field meet

Several Marble Falls High School athletes advanced to the District 25 and 26 area meet thanks to finishing in the top four in their events at the District 25-5A meet April 13-14.

Top of the leader boards are pole vaulters Django Segovia, Anne McCary and Meredith Cormier who had to contend with 25 mph winds. Segovia vaulted 13 feet to win the district championship on the boys side, while McCary and Cormier each cleared 10-6 on the girls side to finish second and third.

“Django was just shy of (setting a new school record,” coach Chris Schrader said. “He was jumping out of his skin. It was hard to get his steps right, but he absolutely had no problem. That helped him a lot. He’s a tough kid, and he’ll make someone a great athlete. Anne and Meredith did a phenomenal job. It’s a coordinated event.”

Logan Barnes was third in the discus thanks to a heave of 140-10, while teammate Forest Swan was fourth in the high jump thanks to a flop of 5-08 for fourth place. Originally, Swan was an alternate, but one of the others who finished ahead of him scratched, allowing the Mustang to compete at the area meet.

“Forest doesn’t quit. I’d take him in a gun fight with a pocket knife, and I’d win. He’s a very talented kid,” schrader said. “Logan did a great job. It’ll be a dogfight to get out. The area is full of tough kids.”

Freshmen Kylie Roberts rounds out the area qualifiers thanks to finishing fourth in the discus with a mark of 104-07. Roberts, who splits her time between softball and track and field, realized that she hadn’t prepared enough for the district meet. So her dad accompanied her to the throwing pits so she could work on her movements while using a flashlight.

“She’s hyper competitive and she’s a workaholic,” Schrader said. “I love having her on the team.”

The area meet is Wednesday, April 21, and will be hosted by New Braunfels Canyon.
