Lady Dawgs see positives in loss at Salado Lady Eagles

The Burnet High School girls soccer team ended the regular season with a 2-1 loss to Salado March 14. Still, the Lady Dawgs (15-7-3, 11-4 District 18-4A) have plenty in front of them, including representing the district as the third-place team in the playoffs. While that opponent from District 17-4A is still unknown because that district finishes up the regular season March 15, Burnet isn’t sitting and waiting around. Head coach Kimberly Myhre had scheduled a warm-up match against San Angelo Lake View representing District 3-4A at 3 p.m. Monday,…

Mustangs’ work at tourney helps them for district

The Marble Falls High School baseball team arrived at the Blanco Tournament March 12 with an agenda that went beyond winning. But make no mistake — winning was at the top. The Mustangs (4-4) defeated Texas Military Institute 4-1 and lost to Blanco 4-1 in a rematch after the Panthers shut out Marble Falls 12-0 a week earlier. Marble Falls head coach Tyler Porter noted his players hadn’t played a game since their 5-4 victory against Fredericksburg March 5. Then Mother Nature forced Blanco Tournament officials to shorten the Mustangs’…

Bulldogs to use tourney results to get better for district

The Burnet High School baseball team lost both games it played in the Blanco Tournament March 12. The Bulldogs (4-4-1, 1-0 District 19-4A) fell to Houston Lutheran South Academy 14-3 and to Iowa Park 10-3. “The two teams we played played really, really well,” Burnet head coach Russell Houston said. “And we made (several) errors in each game.” Those errors made it especially tough on the pitching staff and the defense, Houston said. Lutheran scored 14 runs off 11 hits and capitalized on six Bulldog errors to win in a…

Mustangs finish the 2022 season, look to the future

Following a 2-0 loss to Leander Rouse on March 12, the Marble Falls High School boys soccer team provided purple balloons to its seniors, asking them to release them to symbolize the end of their eligibility and what will happen to them in the next few months. “It’s very easy for me to (define) this team,” head coach Rick Hoover said. “It’s character. I told them this all year. By far this has been my favorite team because of the quality of kids they are. I could turn my back…

Marble Falls High School defensive coordinator Zane Bode is retiring from teaching and coaching. His decision was recently announced, and Bode, who guided the second most-stingiest defense in Class 5A Division II in 2021, is looking forward to his next chapter and grateful for the past three decades. “I want to get back to being a rancher and playing cowboy,” he said. “I’m going back to feeding cows. I’m also going to build a lot of fence.” Bode grew up in a family of coaches that included his father, Charles,…

MFalls staff members are promoted to coordinators

Needing to fill open coordinator positions on his staff, Marble Falls High School head football coach Brian Herman looked at his own current members for those openings. He elevated offensive line coach Robert Draper to offensive coordinator now that Heath Hohmann is the new athletics director and head football coach at Skidmore-Tynan High School. Ryan Craven is the Mustangs defensive coordinator, replacing Zane Bode, who announced his retirement. In making these appointments, Herman noted it keeps consistency and cohesiveness on the staff that’s important for the players. “I compare it…

Making routine plays leads to Burnet’s first district win

In a 2-1 win against Jarrell March 8 to begin District 19-4A play, the Burnet High School baseball team gave a glimpse of how the Bulldogs will be successful. That’s the word from head coach Russell Houston. “If we can compete, throw strikes and play great defense, we can be competitive in our district,” he said. “I tell my kids all the time that if we can make routine plays, we’re going to be in the ball game.” Take hitting. While Jarrell pitcher Carter Kammlah threw 10 strikeouts, the Bulldogs…

The Burnet High School softball team quickly dispatched of Lampasas on March 8, winning 9-0. Head coach Hailey Wooten noted the Lady Dawgs (15-3) led 3-0 through six innings and then erupted for six runs in the seventh inning. Burnet recorded 15 hits. “I always tell them hitting is contagious,” she said. “If we can get our bats rolling, it triggers all the way down. We have the lineup that can be successful.” Sophomore Landee Harless and senior Savannah Gomez, who signed to play college softball for Concordia University in…
