Lady Dawgs qualify for Class 4A playoffs
The Burnet High School girls soccer team earned one of the four playoff berths in District 19-4A thanks to some impressive individual performances that led to lopsided victories.
“The Lady Dawgs have been putting in work the last two weeks,” head coach Kimberly Myhre said, “and it has paid off.”
Burnet (11-7-1, 8-2) completed the season sweep of Gatesville (7-5, 5-4) 1-0 Feb. 25 after beating Florence (2-14, 1-6) 7-0 Feb. 22 and Little River Academy (0-15, 0-9) 7-0 Feb. 18. Currently the Lady Dawgs are in third place with four matches remaining in the regular season.
The lone goal against Gatesville was scored by Caroline Valencia and was assisted by Reagan Shipley. In the first game, the Lady Dawgs needed penalty kicks to win.
The flurry of goals in the other matches came from Amelia Griffin, Kaycie Banton, Valencia, and Shipley, and they were assisted by Caty Crow, Lainey Rye, Hailey Bartlett and Banton
No doubt the Lady Dawgs being offensive is huge. And Myhre also credited another important group for the remarkable tear through the district schedule.
“Our goalkeeper, Juliet Morales, and our defensive line of Katelynn Massey, Emma Gonzalez, Emily Wagner, Adrianna Briggs and Hailey Bartlett have been a huge part in us not getting scored on and keeping the shutouts in each game,” the coach said.
Burnet travels to Lake Belton, 9809 FM 2483 in Temple, for a 7 p.m. kickoff Tuesday, March 1, and returns to Bulldog Field for a 6 p.m. home match Friday, March 4, against Jarrell for senior night.
