Best of the Rest: TCU, Houston continue to roll
It might not have been pretty, but the TCU Horned Frogs‘ strong second half led to a 33-3 win over SMU on Sept. 23. The Horned Frogs have now won five straight over the Mustangs.
Quarterback Kenny Hill set the tone for the second half when he hit John Diarse for a 75-yard touchdown on the first play. Hill finished with 452 yards in the air and two touchdowns. The other went to Jaelan Austin on a fade route.
Hill said the first touchdown to start the third quarter was exactly what the Horned Frogs needed.
“It energizes everybody,” he said. “On the sideline, it was kind of dead. We hit that play, and everybody sparked up.”
Meanwhile, the TCU defense got after the Mustangs. SMU was held to 320 yards, 76 of those on the ground.
TCU will face Oklahoma Oct. 1.
Houston continues its dominance. The 64-3 win at Texas State (1-2, 0-1) on Sept. 24 was the latest in a string of victories for the Cougars (4-0, 2-0).
The Cougars led 43-3 at the half.
Quarterback Greg Ward Jr. was 20 of 26 for 289 yards and two touchdowns in the air and added seven rushes for 39 yards and a touchdown. Running back Duke Catalon had 10 carries for 70 yards and a score, Dillon Birden had seven rushes for 21 yards and a touchdown, and Kyle Postma had two carries for 19 yards and two touchdowns.
The Cougars return home for a showdown with Connecticut, the only team to beat them last year, at 6 p.m. Sept. 29 on ESPN.
