Best of the Rest: other Texas teams playing week 3 games
While most of the state’s powerhouses are playing can’t-miss games, they aren’t the only ones competing. Here is a list of other Texas-based squads taking the gridiron.
Arizona State (2-0) at UTSA (1-1) — The Roadrunners are facing the Sun Devils’ high-octane offense, the same unit that scored often in ASU’s 68-55 win over Texas Tech last week. Running back Kalen Ballage scored eight touchdowns in the contest to tie an NCAA record. On the season, he has 23 rushes for 193 yards and eight touchdowns and four receptions for 69 yards and a score. Quarterback Manny Wilkins has completed 48 of 64 passes for 531 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Liberty (1-1) at SMU (1-1) — The Mustangs are looking to get back on the winning track after losing to Baylor 40-13, though the two teams played to a 6-6 half-time tie. SMU is led by quarterback Ben Hicks who completed 22 of 53 passes for 374 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions. Three running backs — Ke’mon Freeman, Xavier Jones and Braeden West — have each racked up more than 100 rushing yards this season. Texas State (1-0) at Arkansas (1-1) — The Bobcats needed triple overtime, but they defeated Ohio 56-54 to give new coach Everett Withers in his debut. The team is led by quarterback Tyler Jones, who threw for 418 yards and four touchdowns and caught a 22-yard touchdown pass from halfback L.G. Williams. Meanwhile, the Razorbacks needed double overtime to beat TCU 41-38 last week after they led 20-7 in the second half. Quarterback Austin Allen has completed 37 of 58 passes for 414 yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions. Running back Rawleigh Williams has 52 rushes for 233 yards and five touchdowns. North Texas (1-1) at Florida (2-0) — The Mean Green earned its first victory of the season by pounding Bethune-Cookman 41-20. Freshman quarterback Mason Fine was the starter during the win after new coach Seth Littrell benched senior Alec Morris following UNT’s season opening loss to SMU. The win snapped a five-game losing streak dating back to last season. Littrell announced Fine will start in the Mean Green’s toughest test of the season, a trip to The Swamp against the Gators. Florida’s leading receiver, Antonio Callaway who has 13 catches for 201 yards and two touchdowns, is listed as “highly questionable” for the contest. Quarterback Luke Del Rio has completed 48 of 76 passes for 576 yards, six touchdowns and an interception. Running back Jordan Scarlett has 22 rushes for 113 yards and a touchdown. 6:30 p.m. Sept. 17 ESPNU
