There’s still plenty to accomplish for TCU, starting with Iowa State contest

TCU is preparing to face a motivated Iowa State squad still looking for its first win of the season.

The two square off at 11 a.m. Sept. 17 on Fox Sports 1.

The Cyclones (0-2) lost to Northern Iowa 25-0 and to Iowa 42-3. ISU has been playing two quarterbacks: Joel Lanning and Jacob Park.

Lanning has completed 26 of 48 passes for 342 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions and has 24 carries for 37 yards, while Park has six of 15 passes for 79 yards and ran three times for 19 yards.

Running back Mike Warren has 19 carries for 58 yards, and receiver Allen Lazard has 13 catches for 240 yards and a touchdown.

“They have a great tailback, a great receiver corps, and pretty much all of their big guys on defense are coming back,” TCU coach Gary Patterson said.

He noted the Horned Frogs must improve in pass defense, which cost them in the double overtime loss to Arkansas last week 41-38. What was especially disappointing for coaches was the TCU offense ran the double reverse halfback option pass play a day earlier in practice.

“The only guys who seemed surprised when Arkansas ran that play in the game were the guys covering it,” Patterson said.

The coach didn’t see as much sorrow as he did when the Horned Frogs lost to Baylor two years ago. He attributes that to the youth on the team.

And while some may believe ISU to be a pushover, Patterson said winning this contest helps with TCU’s goals, which includes capturing six games to become bowl eligible. Doing that will keep them in the hunt for the Big 12 championship and qualifying for the College Football Playoff.
